Doctors say trendy turmeric supplements can cause liver damage and urge Americans to know the risks
Oct 28, 2022 15:57pm

New research attributed a small but growing number of liver-damage cases to turmeric supplements. Researchers identified 10 cases of liver problems from turmeric supplements, one resulting in death. Clinical evidence doesn''t support turmeric use to treat or prevent any disease, one doctor said. Liver damage from turmeric supplements in the US, though still rare, appears to have increased in recent years, according to a new report by the Drug Induced Liver Injury Network, a federally funded research group. DILIN researchers identified 10 cases in which patients — who were mostly middle-age white women — developed a range of liver problems attributed to turmeric. Five of the patients were hospitalized, and one of them died. The group had data on suspected drug-induced liver injury, including from supplements, from 2004 to 2022. But all the cases that showed turmeric as a highly probable cause for injury occurred after 2011. Six out of 10 cases occurred within the past five years, which the researchers interpreted as evidence of a possible increase in liver injury from turmeric in recent years.

JUST IN: Stocks, pound rise as Rishi Sunak becomes new British PM
Oct 25, 2022 04:02am

Global stocks and the Pound rose on Monday as markets reacted to the news that British-Indian politician Rishi Sunak emerged as the United Kingdom’s new Prime Minister. European and American equities also climbed despite data showing Britain and Germany headed for recession and a plunging Hong Kong stock market as Chinese President Xi Jinping handed key economic posts to loyalists behind his zero-Covid strategy. Wall Street also opened in the green on Monday, with sentiment boosted by hopes the Federal Reserve would soon slow its pace of interest rate hikes. News that European gas prices were at a four-month low also spurred traders, as the reference Dutch TTF dipped below 100 euros for the first time since June, reaching 98.60 euros per megawatt hour at around 1030 GMT on Monday. All eyes were on Britain as Sunak emerged the country’s third prime minister in less than two months following the resignations of Boris Johnson and Liz Truss. His last rival for leadership of the ruling Conservative party, Penny Mordaunt, dropped out of the race on Monday, clearing the way for Sunak to become prime minister after his failed bid earlier this year. “The pound started the week trading higher as many see the new potential PM as a source of some stability, particularly when compared to the chaotic term served by the Truss government which saw massive volatility across markets,” noted XTB chief market analyst Walid Koudmani. “Many see Sunak as the final chance for the Conservative Party as he has managed to maintain some credibility” compared with the uncertainty of the Truss and Johnson premierships, he added. “Investors clearly hope Sunak will stabilise the economy and the political situation — though it’s hard to work out at this point which is the harder task,” commented AJ Bell financial analyst Danni Hewson.

European shares fall on earnings jitters, Credit Suisse slides on US probe report
Oct 12, 2022 09:30am

European shares slipped again on Wednesday as a batch of mixed earnings reports heightened worries about the impact of tighter monetary policies and soaring inflation on corporate profits. The pan-European STOXX 600 index fell 0.2% by 0706 GMT––its sixth consecutive session of losses––with real estate and banks leading the sectoral decline. Weak results from Barratt Developments, Britain’s largest housebuilder, sparked a selloff in the sector. Philips fell 8.1% as the Dutch health technology company said its quarterly core profit would drop around 60%, and it flagged a massive charge on the value of its plagued sleep and respiratory care business. Credit Suisse dropped 3.6% after Bloomberg reported the US Justice Department is investigating whether the Swiss lender continued helping US clients hide assets from authorities, eight years after it paid a $2.6-billion tax evasion settlement.
